Stories of air combat during World War II are not uncommon. Young American men climbed into airplanes that flew five miles above the earth fought barbaric engagements with a determined enemy while temperatures were forty to fifty degrees below zero. These arduous missions were done while they depended upon their oxygen masks to keep them breathing and fleece lined flight suits to keep them from freezing.
What is unusual is an air battle that lasted only two minutes and involved the loss of 16 airplanes – half American and half German. The “Biberwald” dogfight over Austria was among the fiercest aerial engagements of the war that not only took lives, but forever changed those who survived.
“On The Wing” is a documentary film shot at locations on two continents which captures the story of the shortest recorded air combat mission of World War II fought by the 465th and 464th Bomb Groups of the 15th Air Force. Filmmaker Brad Branch has managed to capture the essence of that fateful day when his father, Bartham Branch of Bedford, New Hampshire, was an integral part of that mission. This exciting and noteworthy account of skilled airmen flying in the face of adversity is being shown in the Devino classroom of Aviation Museum of New Hampshire on Saturday, October 13th at 11:00 AM as part of the Second Saturday @ Museum program. The public is welcome and encouraged to attend, and the presentation is included in the price of museum admission. Seating is limited and will be on a first-come/first-serve basis.
